“NHIN Direct specifies a simple, secure, scalable, standards-based way for participants to send encrypted health information directly to known, trusted recipients over the Internet.” For all of you who have heard of “NHIN 2.0”, then “NHIN Lite” and finally (with its current appellation), “NHIN Direct” - formally announced at HIMSS this year. You have likely heard a variety of descriptions – not all clear or consistent with one another. If you’ve peered into the many discussions at, when your browser session finally expired, you may still not have had a clear view. A bit more casually, I would simply translate the formal definition to the right as "NHIN Direct specifies how to ensure secure, encrypted email (with attachments) with personal health information between authenticated parties."
