Tried to download some software recently? Tried to figure out some coding problem by going to MSDN? Its just gotten tougher and much less private.
These days Microsoft heavies have dictated that to browse Microsoft's development information, one now needs to have their every movement tracked by Microsoft's Live.com. Basically a way for Microsoft to track everyone's movement (a la Google/DoubleClik, ADMT, Overture, and a host of newer anti-privacy companies like Phorm,...

Team Foundation Server 2008 SP1 is out (albeit not quite on schedule) and there are not only a healthy number of bug fixes primarily from customer feedback - but also a number of (minor) convenience enhancements based on feedback. Especially exciting is the more convenient handling of source code.
Note also the new release of the TFS Migration Toolkit. Next stop: Rosario!

Much maligned due to its poor support for style sheets and numerous bugs, Microsoft's FrontPage still was reasonably friendly by virtue of its WYSIWYG interface and integrated into enterprise SharePoint sites. Its derivative changed names to avoid the poor rep - and with good justification. The next product in this slot, Expression Web, was totally overhauled, supported by a complementary suite of Expression products.
Expression Web 2 is now out and according to PC Mag's latest analysis may even best Adobe's fuller featured Dreamweaver CS4! Nice additions are support for PHP, native Photoshop PSD files, Silverlight (and improved Flash support). Lack of support for secure FTP - and for universal client-side scripting - mars the picture somewhat. This is good news for folks generating web content.
Now if KompoZer, the best open source WYSIWYG HTML editor,...

This fun image comes from Jim Collins' book Good to Great. As he notes, the goal is to understand what you can be the best at, not some goal, strategy, intention or plan to be the best. Read more at www.jimcollins.com/lab/hedgehog/. The idea to do the best at one focused goal - to the exclusion of (nearly) all else to attain one's best potential comes from the Greek poet Archilochus, as brought forward by Isaiah Berlin's essay, The Hedgehog and the Fox. A 10 Gbit network was initially consider extremely silly, but viewed form the standpoint of current storage technology and it now portends a shift from expensive Fiber Channel Storage Area Networks (FC SAN). Good stuff -- and a big win for simplicity.

Ryan Smith at AnandTech did a knowledgeable review of Vista SP1 a couple days ago. Critical to drive users to the lagging Vista, SP1 fixes a number of bugs (e.g., NTFS corruption on external drives) and even some design issues (e.g., slow file copying & compression), but not completely.
My pet peeve with Vista, the User Account Control (UAC), is less obnoxious. I quickly disabled it however and am unsure if I'll turn it on even now.
Network traffic is still throttled when MultiMedia Class Scheduler Service is active to ensure audio doesn't get interrupted during playback. With Vista, users were unable to adjust this. With SP1 this can be manually adjusted up from the default 10% using the following registry key:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Multimedia\SystemProfile\NetworkThrottlingIndex
.csharpcode, .csharpcode pre

I just read about the intreging concept of Swicki's. These are basically a search engine - but personalised by a user community.
By providing an initial list of well-ranked (i.e., relevant & valued) sites when creating a swicki, one can then search this knowledge-base to get accurate results.
You can add the swicki to your site using this link, and search it directly using this link. Cool!
